Wow, so newgrounds got big enough that they actually decided to do their own awards ceremony, with trophies and all. This is a pretty big thing, even if it's just going out from a website. It's only once a year, with REAL gold plated trophies you can win. You'd think that only the top quality submissions, all artistically, stylistically, well scripted, beautiful graphics, great originality, submissions would get in. Nah. This is newgrounds, are you kidding me?? Even at a professional attempt at giving back to the community, newgrounds can't take animation seriously. The website built around uploading your original content does not promote originality at all. Disgusting.

The sick part about what i just said, is that it is over the top all too true. Ghostmas is bad enough, but a madness animation?? And they didn't just take it that far, there are also 2 madness spinoffs in the mix, too!! An animation with little original graphics besides stick figures, a movie that's a spinoff of a commercial with little animation at all, a movie where the characters have no style and are blatantly ripped off of southpark, hell dude, almost ALL of the nominees are a ripoff. If newgrounds really wanted to have quality, filmfest, award-winning animations in its selection process the only movies that are there now that i could see being there in a real life animation awards situation are Waterlollies and The Stranger Forest. Sometimes good, deserving animations are featured on the front page, and sometimes they even win money. But situations like this just ruin the whole point of trying to promote decent flash.

Now I'm not trying to be a total asshole about everything, I'm suggesting drastic improvement could be taken place if efforts were made. Oh, and I expect several comments entailing 'you're just mad because none of your movies are up there!' or 'if you hate newgrounds so much why don't you leave!' Yeah, well feel free to bitch and moan all you want to. None of that is going to change my opinion.

EDIT: And yes I did read the whole nominees page, several times before posting this.

EDIT 2: Another thing I should have added when posting this, there's a fine line on what deserves to be popular, and what deserves to win an award. What's popular isn't always best.

notorious i think you're bein a bit too harsh, the choices for the most part are somewhat deserving and even the less original ones have a lot of work put into them. sure madness and bunnykill are old and tired concepts that arent well thought out, but i highly doubt they'll win. my newgrounds is really the only irredeemably shitty flash on there and its not winning either. i havent watched a lot of the others you mentioned but most of them seem at least somewhat original even if they aren't funny at all (ghostmas)

Well, what do you propose? The nominees are mostly based on what animations and games have placed first in the monthly contests, with some extras thrown in. I don't doubt that there are some 'hidden gems' so to speak, that deserve to take the place of some nominees, but what are they? and how do you decide who is able to make that decision? There's way too much content on this site to notice everything that passes through. The only way you can arrive at a pool of nominees like this is to base it on what the community has chosen over the course of the year.

When you watch the grammys, who do you see? Popular artists. That local band you listen to might be awesome, but there's no way to prove to a majority that they deserve a spot in contention. Is it fair? Not always. So again I ask- instead of bitching about who was selected, what do YOU think is a better way to do it?

well yeah of course you do, you're an ng admin. These animations (for the most part) have all been so glorified before though, and tbh, a little over glorified. I think it's time that we should bring some new submissions to the spotlight.

It's all the monthly winners and the winners of several 'event days', that's just the rules. There's a couple others too I think.

Even if something like 'Smash Kingdom' was number one for the month, it'd be on that list, despite having no 'artistic value' or whatever.

If anything, this gives people a new aim. There's daily first, weekly first, monthly first....but now we've been given an ultimate shiny trinket which isn't just a bunch of pixels and a prize pack - it's the honour of being the author of the best submission of the entire year. If that isn't something to work towards then I don't know what is.

You seem to be forgetting that NG's catchphrase is 'everything by everyone' - which is why you've got Madness flashes in the selection (that, and the madness day winner goes in anyway). If every submission was 'film award quality' then newgrounds would be dead to me. It's the everyman's flash site, and it does my head in when people start getting on a high horse about stuff.

newgrounds takes animation just as seriously as you don't. Originality is simply one of the defining factors of a winning submission. If your flash is lazy, poorly executed dribble, covered in a pretentious meaning, you fail. Stop complaining, and start practicing, because no matter how unoriginal any one of the nominees may be, you couldn't come close to over taking any of them in technical prowess.

The pool of nominees for each category is comprised of the following:

* The top winner from each month. (If the winner was a solo staff submission or did not have an objective (in the case of games), inclusion was passed down to the next place.)

* Top winners in special NG contests. (The winner of each contest was placed into either the Game or Movie category).

* Submissions included as Honorable Mentions. (These were chosen by Tom Fulp to round out the list to 18 total entries.)

Even though What is Love had a SouthPark style, does not mean it was not well-deserving of the spot. It was amazingly animated and was an enjoyable experience.

I too agree with you though that the animations TRULY deserving of the spot were the Stranger Forest and Waterlollies. I can almost 100% guarantee Adam philips will win.

Heck, just because there's some movies in the nominees that aren't the most original doesn't mean it's impossible for them to be enjoyable.

The staff will decide what wins anyway, and there's a good chance it actually will be an orignal movie, so what does it matter if there's anything else up there when it's over?

Examples:
Madness and Bunnykill = won't win
Aladdin 3150 and Waterlollies = way more likely to win

I don't really see the point of complaining about it unless you can offer a better system of selection.

For what it's worth my personal favorites to win would be either Aladdin 3150
or The Stranger Forest as they are both the most innovative and really push thing to the limit.

I dunno. Everything about how they're chosen has pretty much already been said. Its a fair process, and with the jury that's up there, I'm sure the winner will be pretty deserving.

On the otherhand, what's so original about Waterlollies then, by your arguement? It is another Bitey flash. Here's the premise: Bitey's an asshole. I have just summed up the majority of his work, so you can't just break down a series and say it is pointless, because every flash can be broken down into three words if you want to criticize it.

The Blockhead movie is another unlikely candidate, so you just need to take these things in stride and stop whining.

well, i must say that. why dont you try and do something about the situation if you hate it? like, tryoing to make a movie taht will break the usual type of movies taht are nominated. besides, in EVERY award contest, in the nominees, there always was one useless/ less good submitted movie. its not like its impossible to b happening here. i mean, it will not win, yet, it has a right to be nominated (fe, good style, animation, humour ...and other category!) so, even if its not original.. it is having a unique part.

howver, since its taken and voted BY the people, and will be decided by the PEOPLE... it will be judged fairly. (also considering taht tom and his staff will be fair...)

I totally agree. The newgrounds tank awards should only feature the utmost artistic and original pieces that give you atleast a slightly changed perspective or move you in some form. They have little web icons for the popular ones that people can enjoy for shits and giggles.

I did cringe when i read this, NOT because i thought it was untrue and annoying, but because i knew that no one would take it seriously and it would be flamed.

Having said that and being a fan of your stuff and other artists i find original, I am going to have to say that I do agree with you and I see where you are coming from. "Bad Baby" has intrigued me for weeks now and i wish Karri Esala would make more. When I saw your vids "Sleepless Nights" and "Lethal Injection" I was left thinking and creeped out at the same time. I was also left craving more of your work. I think alot of the popular stuff on newgrounds is popular because of trendiness and the popularity of the artists that created it. The cartoons i can't get enough of aren't the ones that are "popular" and the popular cartoons I like are just there and become less interesting over time.

Waterlollies was freaking amazing and I agree one hundred percent.

I Also feel like, for many things (mostly the cartoons) here have to include some kind newgrounds culture. When i say that i mean, it isn't really funny outside of newgrounds.
